Why We Have Hope

This event is inspired by Kamdyn who is a charming 5 year old diagnosed with SMA in 2013. SMA is a terminal condition that robs people of strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe. Kamdyn’s parents never expected to hear that their "lazy" baby who didn't want to walk or crawl, in fact, had a terrible disease that would eventually affect every aspect of his life. The Hartungs were told there was no cure or treatment available for SMA and their world was turned upside down.

Shortly after diagnosis, the Hartungs connected with Cure SMA which helped them realize they weren't alone in this fight. Kamdyn’s family quickly learned about all the amazing things Cure SMA offers to families affected by this disease, from loaning equipment to those in need to hosting a huge, annual conference for families and researchers to connect.

It is through events like the Evening of Hope for Kamdyn’s Kure that Cure SMA is able to fund advancing research that will one day lead to a cure.

Cure SMA is dedicated to the treatment and cure of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)—a disease that takes away a person’s ability to walk, eat, or breathe. 8 million Americans carry the gene that causes SMA , and it is the number one genetic cause of death for infants.

Since 1984, we’ve directed and invested in comprehensive research that has shaped the scientific community’s understanding of SMA. We are currently on the verge of breakthroughs in treatment  that will strengthen our children’s bodies, extend life, and lead to a cure.

We have deep expertise in every aspect of SMA—from the day-to-day realities to the nuances of care options—and until we have a cure, we’ll do everything we can to support children and families affected by the disease.
