Valentine's Day Advocacy Campaign
We love newborn screening, especially as more states continue to add SMA to their testing panel. Now let's show Congress how much we care about newborn screening and the SMA community!
With Valentine's Day around the corner and the introduction of the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act to Congress expected in February, we are excited to invite you and your family to be part of a new and fun advocacy campaign for Cure SMA! The Valentine's Day Campaign gives you and your family the opportunity to send a personalized Valentine's Day card to Members of Congress asking them to support the bill. This is a fun project for families, all while showing our support for very important legislation.
The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act supports national programs that provide support to each of the states newborn screening programs. With additional funding and resources, states can enhance, improve and expand comprehensive newborn screening programs, including screening for SMA, education for parents and providers, laboratory quality and follow-up services. We must make sure that states have the resources to screen for SMA and refer patients and families to appropriate follow up care. The legislation also reauthorizes the Secretary of Health’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children, which reviews conditions and makes recommendations whether to add conditions to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). This is the same panel that added SMA to this list in July.
Express your creativity while decorating your Valentine’s Day card! Feel free to share the details of your experience with SMA or pictures of you and your family. Just make sure to show your Members of Congress some love and directly ask them to cosponsor the newborn screening bill. You can find your representatives and senators’ names by entering your zip code here and here. Don’t forget to include your address if you’d like a response!
We have included Valentine’s Day Card templates for you to print and decorate.
Once you are finished decorating and filling your Valentine’s Day card with love, please send it to our national office (address below) by February 5th. We will hand deliver your Valentines cards on Capitol Hill on Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
